She graduated from Mt. Morris High School, Class of 1965. She earned an associate’s degree in medical transcription from Highland Community College. She attended nurses training at Rockford Memorial Hospital. She married Harold Goeking on July 5, 1969, in Mt. Morris, IL. She was employed as a bookkeeper/manager for C & H Trucking. She lived in the Mt. Morris area most of her life. Carla was a member of the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren; Served on Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity; Served on Church Board for the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren; and helped with Loaves & Fish Food Pantry.
Carla is survived by her father John Taylor of Mt. Morris, IL; husband, Harold Goeking of Polo, IL; son, Hal (Laura) Goeking of Oshkosh, WI; daughters, Sara (Alex Anderson) Goeking of Logan, Utah; Janet Goeking of Chicago, IL.; grandchildren, Brant and Bryna Goeking, Oshkosh, WI.; four brothers, Kennard (Bonnie) Taylor of Los Angeles, CA., David (Barb) Taylor of Savage, MN., Adin (Helen) Taylor of Oregon, IL., Randall (Lori) Taylor of Holmen, WI.; one sister, Gayle (Charles) Wright of Chaska, MN. Predeceased by her mother.
Service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 26, 2010 at Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren, Rev. Virginia Haney officiating. Burial at Silver Creek Cemetery, Mt. Morris, IL. Guttenberg, IA – John C. Hollaway, 68, died Friday, July 16, 2010, in Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. John was born Jan. 1, 1942, in Doniphan, Mo., to Henry and Edna (Moore) Hollaway. He married Darlene Grove on May 7, 1966, in Leaf River, Ill. John retired as a machinist in 2004 after 45 years. He lived in Leaf River before retiring to Guttenberg. He served in the U.S. Army. John loved to RV, golf and fish. He was a member of Blackhawk Grange. John is survived by his wife, Darlene Hollaway of Guttenberg; son, Scott (Susan) Hollaway of Guttenberg; daughter, Nickie (Kenneth) Lingbeck of Leaf River; grandchildren, Kaden Lingbeck of Leaf River and Nolan Hollaway of Guttenberg; sisters, Bonnie (Ralph) Hazen of Mount Airy, N.C., and Pat (Charles) Spray of Rockford, Ill. He was preceded in death by parents; and five infant sisters. Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, in Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mount Morris, Ill., with the Rev. Jane was born March 9, 1943, in Spring Valley to Thomas “Sal” and Ruth (Newman) Segatta. Jane graduated from Hall High School, Class of 1961, and from LaSalle-Peru Oglesby Jr. College, Class of 1963. She married Loren Van Degraft on June 7, 1965, in Spring Valley. Jane lived in the Byron-Mount Morris area since 1975, moving from Lincoln. She was a real estate broker manager for Whitehead Realty. Jane was previously employed with Gambino and Century 21 Country North. She was a member of the Rockford Area Association of Realtors. Survivors include her husband, Loren Van Degraft of Byron; son, Chris Van Degraft of Aurora; daughters, Karen (David) Gustafson of Joliet and Jenny (Reggie) Norfleet of Plano; grandchildren, Alycia Van Degraft of Aurora, Kayla, Scott, Tom Gustafson of Joliet, McKenzie and Alexander Norfleet of Plano; and brother, Joe Segatta of Akron, Ohio. Jane is preceded in death by her parents. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, in Immaculate Conception Church, Spring Valley, with the Rev. Robert Stilman officiating. Mt. Morris, IL – Chris Davis, 84, of Mt. Morris died May 22, 2010, in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris, IL. Chris was born October 19, 1925 in Salem Township, Salem, Illinois, the youngest daughter of Fred & Flora (Bower) Albert. She graduated from Rock Falls High School Class of 1943. Chris toured the south in her early 20’s with the Al Barnett jazz band as a vocalist. After touring, she traveled to Chicago and Detroit where she began auditioning with big bands. she had the opportunity to audition for Lawrence Welk band. From 1944-45 she was featured as a vocalist at the Rendezvous nightclub in Rock Island, IL. Chris married Burlen Davis, a band leader and drummer in a 3 piece band at the Rainbow, July 18, 1949, in Clinton, Iowa. Burlen died in 1992. In 1952 Burlen and Chris started the Mt. Morris Cleaners in Mt. Morris, IL. She was a member of the Methodist Church, an accomplished artist which she designed sets for the Mt. Morris Lions Club shows. She had many paintings and portraits in private collections throughout the United States.

She is survived by 2 Sons: Rick (Paula) Davis, Byron, IL and Doug (Debbie) Davis, Castle Rock, CO. 2 Granddaughters, Andrea Davis, Greeley, CO and Victoria Davis, Castle Rock, CO.

Chris is preceded in death by her Parents; Husband Burlen; 1 Sister; Rowena Baughman; 2 Brothers; Ken & Gerald.

Services will be Saturday May 29, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris, IL with the Rev. Frank Lay. Mount Morris, IL – Wayne W. Pierce, 92, of Mount Morris died April 25, 2010, in the Serenity House in Oregon. Born Sept. 11, 1917, in Polo, the son of Lemuel and Susie (Cable) Pierce. Graduated from Polo Community High School in 1935. Married Wilma Reynolds on Sept. 1, 1942, in Polo. He served four years and six months in the Army during World War II. He was released from active duty as a Captain, having served in Africa and Europe with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment and 82nd Airborne Division. Wayne was company commander in the Normandy D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. His decorations include the Silver Star medal, Netherlands Bronze Lion, Bronze Star medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. He stayed in the Army Reserve and retired in 1963 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In 1997 he authored a book, “Let’s Go!”, the story of the men who served in the 325 Glider Infantry Regiment. Worked 35 years at Kable Printing Co., retiring in 1980 as purchasing manager. He served in numerous Mount Morris community activities, including vice-president of the Mount Morris Community District School Board, commander of Post 3639 VFW, president and lieutenant governor of the Mount Morris Kiwanis Club. Active leader in both the Boy Scout Troop 66 and cub master of Pack 333. Member of Disciples United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge 1551, American Legion 143, VFW Post 8738, C-47 Club, 82nd Airborne Division and 325 GIR Association. He was active in church work in Mount Morris, serving as chairman of the board, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and chairman of the trustees, Mount Morris Disciples United Methodist Church. Also served as chairman of the Mount Morris Council of Churches. Survived by wife, Wilma of Mount Morris; daughter, Rosalyn Southard of Crestone, Colo.; son, Terry (Sharon) of Mount Morris; grandchildren, Zachariah and Zara Southard and Brooks Pierce, all of New Mexico; brother, Col. Dwight Pierce of Cape Coral, Fla.; great-granddaughter, Malia Southard-Kante; stepgrandson, Nick (Rudy) Osborne; and stepgreat-granddaughter, Samantha. Predeceased by parents; sisters, Dale and Lacie Pieper and Dovie Cooper; and brother, Lemuel Jr. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, May 3, in Disciples United Methodist Church. Burial of cremation remains in Fairmount Cemetery in Polo. Visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 2, in Finch Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established at Disciples United Methodist Church, Mount Morris Senior Center and Ogle County Hospice Association.

Mount Morris, IL – Ethel Kathleen Robinson, 78, of Mount Morris, died April 15, 2010, in Rockford Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 23, 1931, in Mount Morris, daughter of Burdette Myers and Blanche (Miller) Myers and graduated of Mount Morris High School, Class of 1949. She married G. Richard Robinson on June 16, 1951, in Mount Morris; he died Nov. 20, 2004.

Ethel was a homemaker and seamstress and a member of Disciples United Methodist Church of Mount Morris, Chatty Quilters, United Methodist Women and Ogle County Home Extension. She was an avid reader and loved quilting.

She is survived by a son, Richard (Julie) Robinson, of Mount Morris; grandsons, Sean Robinson, of Mount Morris, and James (Kimberly) Robinson, of Lena; great-grandson, A.J. Robinson, of Lena; great-granddaughter, Taylor Robinson, of Lena; and special friends, Bonnie, Corky and Jackie.

She was also predeceased by her parents; sister, Lois Avey; and brother, Don Myers.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 19, in Disciples United Methodist Church, Mount Morris, with visitation from 10 a.m. to time of service; the Rev. Doc Newcomb officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Mount Morris.

Mt. Morris, IL – Donald B. “Mississippi Slim” Smith, 89, died April 4, 2010 at the Ogle County Hospice Serenity Home. Born on March 14, 1921 in Winnebago, IL to Neil and Nellie (Brenner) Smith. He graduated from Winnebago High School and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He served in the US Coast Guard in the North Atlantic Theater during W.W.II. He married Marilyn J. Mumbower on July 6, 1999 in Freeport, IL. He worked as a Plant Manager for Carnation Milk Co. in Sparta, TN; owned and operated Southern Window Service in Lexington, KY; Sales Superintendent of Armour Ag. Chemical Company in Chicago Heights, IL. He was a member of the Mt. Morris American Legion Post 143; VFW Post 8455 in Kansas City, Missouri; life member of Disabled American Veterans. For many years Don wrote a syndicated newspaper column called “Rowing Along With Mississippi Slim”.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn; 1 step-daughter, Leann (Jon) Jensen, Sharon, MA; twin grandsons, Michael and Tyler Jensen, Sharon, MA. Predeceased by his parents, 5 brothers, and 3 sisters.

Case, August 12, 1995 in Byron, IL. Linda retired as a safety director for Quality Metal in 1997, after 23 years. She is a lifetime Byron Area resident. She is a member of Global Harvest Church. She was a member of the American Association of Safety Engineers, and she was a member of the TARP Disaster Team with the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office.
Linda is survived by her husband, Francis Case, Byron, IL. Son: Joseph J. Ganus, Byron, IL. Daughter: Tracey (Alan) Conway, Rockford, IL. Alberquerque, New Mexico – Todd Allen Moore, 72, died March 12, 2010 at Northwest Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Born on November 14, 1937 to John E. and Helen M. (Babcock) Moore. He married Barbara D. Mayfield on December 21, 1963 in Freeport, IL. He graduated from Freeport High School, received a bachelor degree in English and a masters degree in Library Science from Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, IL. He worked as an English teacher at Belvidere High School, Belvidere, IL for 23 years; retiring in 1993. Todd has lived in Alberquerque, NM for the last 16 years.
He is a member of Illinois Education Association and Bowie Knife Association. Todd enjoyed writing poetry and collecting western memorabilia.
Survived by his wife Barbara; 2 sons: Theron (Jeanette) Moore, Alberquerque, NM; Jason (Tami) Moore, Alberquerque, NM. 5 Grandchildren all of Alberquerque, NM: Jonathan Carter, Danielle Carter, Mareya Gutierrez, Emma Moore, and Jacob Moore. 1 sister: Nancy (Wayne) Weier, Freeport, IL; 1 brother; Gary (Mary) Moore, Cherry Valley, IL.
